Should Your Home Fit a Neighborhood Aesthetic?

When considering a remodeling project, you aren't likely making choices for yourself alone. If you live in a neighborhood or on a street with other houses, your house is not an island. It's part of a visual landscape, therefore, the choices you make for its exterior impact the surrounding neighborhood.

The answer to whether your home should fit a neighborhood aesthetic is almost always yes. When considering any exterior home remodel or when building a custom home, begin by drawing design inspiration from the aesthetic theme of the neighborhood. Here are some tips to do this the right way.

Do’s and Don’ts of Exterior Design in a Neighborhood

Choosing Colors

DO: Pay attention to the design and color schemes of surrounding homes. Note what colors are used, what would look good and what might look out of place. This is especially important when homes are situated very close together, or if you have attached or semi-attached housing.

DON’T: Pick colors that will clash with neighboring homes and make your home stick out. This creates visual discord that detracts from the overall look of the neighborhood.

DO: Be willing to pick coordinating colors for your home’s exterior – but not the same colors. Choose a color that complements other nearby homes without copying them.

DON’T: Try to make your home look like an exact replica of other houses on the block by choosing the same exterior design and colors. Let your home represent your personal preferences.

Choosing Materials

DO: Utilize modern materials that imitate those on other homes in the neighborhood – but will last much longer. This is particularly true if you’re remodeling in an older, established neighborhood. Products such as LP® SmartSide® engineered wood trim and siding give your exterior the look of traditional wood, but resist damage from termites and fungal decay.

DON’T: Go cheap on exterior materials. Low-cost vinyl siding may be easy on the pocketbook, but will your investment pay off if all the neighboring houses are covered in a higher-quality material?
