5 Ways to Make Your Home Exterior Welcoming in Winter
The dreary days of winter can really put a damper on the exterior appeal of a home. Many homeowners rely on a lush lawn and brightly colored flowers and shrubbery to give their exterior the wow factor, but there are many other ways to add curb appeal. Here are some tips to make your home stand out all winter long.
- Clear walkways. Like mowing and edging your lawn in summer, trimming back trees and shrubs and keeping the walkways neat and clear of snow sends a message that your property is well-cared-for. Don’t forget the welcome mat too, so visitors can wipe off snow and dirt before entering.
- Light it up. In the winter months, the days are short and good lighting becomes a necessity as well as a way to make your home feel welcoming. Add lights along the outside walkway, on the porch and even at the rear of the home to illuminate a porch, deck or other outdoor structure. To avoid a vibe that’s overly Christmas-y, use clear or white lights.
- Utilize potted plants. Since winter lacks color from most kinds of vegetation, an alternative is to use evergreen plants in brightly colored pots along walkways and near entrances. Species such as blue holly, barberry, juniper, cypress and boxwood can stay beautifully green throughout the year.
- Coordinate holiday decorations with your home. Outdoor decorations should complement the exterior of your home, not look gaudy. If your siding and trim combinations are more modern, lean toward modern holiday décor items. If your exterior is Victorian or rustic, traditional décor will fit best. Decorations should also complement the siding and trim colors of your home.
- Update exterior accents. Give your home a coordinated, harmonious look by selecting the same color scheme and materials for the mailbox, house numbers, outdoor lighting and front door hardware. Be sure the accent color coordinates with your existing siding and entry door.
