The Use of LP SolidStart Engineered Wood Products and LP SmartSide Trim & Siding in Residential Developments
SUMMARY
Founded in 1991, Roth Homes is a family-owned and operated business in Boise, Idaho, who have stated that their mission is to deliver unique homes with authentic character and detail to its customers. As one of Idaho's premier homebuilders, Roth Homes is dedicated to building communities of innovative homes with distinct diversity.
OBJECTIVES
According to Josh Edwards, their principal manager, over the past few years, Roth Homes has focused on designing and building affordable "move-up" homes in both its Winter's Run and Penn Square developments. In order to achieve affordability without sacrificing quality, Roth Homes needed building materials with consistent performance and versatility for both the structure and exterior of their homes.
IMPLEMENTATION
At the recommendation of their supplier, Roth Homes turned to LP Building Products to meet its goals for beauty, affordability and quality. All Roth Homes now utilize LP® SolidStart® LSL, LP SolidStart LVL, LP SolidStart I-Joists, LP SolidStart Rim Board, and LP® SmartSide® Trim & Siding. When it comes to the structure of the home, Roth Homes uses a number of LP SolidStart products and has benefited from their proven performance history, strength and stability.
"All the framing components work so well together, and they are more cost effective than other products," Edwards said. "We don't have any problems with our floors, which has a lot to do with the SolidStart I-Joists. We never have callbacks on squeaks or settling." LP SolidStart I-Joists have superior long-term strength and stability when compared to traditional lumber, and the wide flanges create greater stability.
Roth Homes has also benefited from the strength of LP SolidStart LSL in a number of residential applications, from new construction to extensive remodels.
"I have been extremely impressed with the load calculations and spans we are able to put on the SolidStart LSL," said Edwards. "When we have a bonus room application, we specify the LSL for the bottom cords. We have never had any issue with floor squeaks or any other performance issues unlike what we used to encounter with traditional wood bottom cords."
But for Roth Homes, the use of LP products goes beyond the internal structure of their homes. LP SmartSide Trim & Siding is used to create a distinct look.
"We want to deliver unique homes to our customers, and SmartSide helps us achieve that goal," Edwards said. "SmartSide is easy to work with. It installs well, it's easy to paint, and the paint stays on. The outside appearance of a home is huge; it's where you capture your buyers. SmartSide helps us do that."
OUTCOME
From the Winter’s Run community to the Penn Square development, Roth Homes is providing distinct, affordable homes in Boise, Idaho.
"If anyone asks me about products, I always tell them to use LP. The products have never failed or had any issues. I've never had callbacks," Edwards said. "Our homeowners are happy because we're not in their houses having to fix them."
