5 Last-Minute Shed Winterizing Tips
Have you forgotten to winterize your backyard shed - until now? These sturdy structures can easily endure spring, summer and fall, but may require extra care to protect tools, equipment and other stored items in the winter months. Here's how to help keep your shed strong and trouble-free through the winter.
- Check the roof. Visually inspect the shed roof for signs of damage, such as curling or cracking shingles. Inspect the underside of the roof for water leaks that can lead to problems with mold, mildew and rot. Have any issues repaired by a professional roofer as soon as possible. Trim back overhanging tree branches at least 10 feet from the roofline, as they can damage a garden shed if they become weighed down by ice and snow.
- Clean out gutters and downspouts. If your shed has a gutter system, be sure to climb up and take a look inside. Remove built-up leaves and debris that could lead to clogs in gutters and downspouts. Clogged gutters cause a number of issues, including overflowing water that may lead to damage to siding materials, gardens and landscaping.
- Clear it out, clean it up. Empty your shed so you can sweep out dirt and cobwebs. Dispose of any broken or unused items. Ensure seeds, potting soil, fertilizer and mulch are stored in closed, nonporous containers with tight-fitting lids to avoid attracting rodents and other pests. Learn how to get more out of the space in your shed with easy organization tips.
- Secure windows and doors. Weatherstrip doors and overhead doors, or replace cracked weatherstripping if necessary. Caulk around the frames of windows and doors to keep out moisture and drafts. If the outdoor temperature is very low, be sure to use a high-performance caulk with a rubber or silicone base that won’t freeze like latex, and make sure the caulk is stored indoors before use so it will flow smoothly. Lubricate door hinges so they function optimally even during winter.
- Maintain tools and equipment. Empty gas and oil from summer lawn equipment such as lawn mowers and trimmers. Drain water from garden hoses. Clean and dry gardening tools before placing them back in storage so they will be ready for spring use.
