4 Ways to Grow Your Best Garden This Spring
Previously, we offered ideas that helped you get ready for the new gardening season. If you followed those tips, you’ve already mapped out your garden beds, selected which plants you will grow and ordered seeds. You may even have some starter plants growing indoors. Now it’s time to move outside and get ready for a great growing season!
Here are some additional spring gardening tips to help you grow your best garden.
- Give your soil some love. Get your soil ready for planting. Clear out any weeds that may have grown, and apply new compost from your compost pile or store-bought compost to add nutrients to the soil. Be sure you add compost a week or two before planting, so it won’t burn the roots of new plants and has time to work its way into the soil.
- Repair raised beds and edge around flat beds. Soggy winter soil can strain and bow out the sides of raised garden beds. Take the time to fix them by digging back the soil on the bowed sides and reinforcing the sideboards with stakes. Clean up the edges around other planting beds with an edger and trowel to keep your garden looking neat.
- Know your zone and frost dates. Before you decide when you will plant seeds and transfer starter plants to the garden, you need to know your first and last frost dates. Nothing is quite as frustrating for a gardener as tender plants that are damaged or killed by frost. The Old Farmer’s Almanac offers a calculator to help you determine frost dates for your location.
- Nip spring weeds in the bud. Pull any emerging weeds in the garden now, while roots are shallow. Cover bare spots in your garden beds with ground cover or mulch to discourage the growth of new weeds.
